Camp Mt. Spurr Volcano Plan

The safety and well-being of your children, our staff, and our community is always our top priority. We are working closely with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, HVAC experts, the facility manufacturer, our general contractor, and others to prepare for any possible impacts from Mt. Spurr’s activity. While things are currently calm, we want to ensure families are informed and ready should ashfall occur.

What to Expect

Immediate closure: If we are notified that ashfall is expected in Anchorage, The Dome will close immediately.
Timely pickup: Families will need to be prepared to pick up their child within one hour of notification.
Organized pickup process: Children will be lined up outside with staff for safe, orderly check-out. This process may take time; we appreciate your patience as we prioritize every child’s safety.
Facility safety measures: We have HEPA-grade air scrubbers and N95 masks available for all campers if needed.
Temporary closure: The Dome will remain closed during ashfall and for a period afterward to complete thorough cleaning and system inspections.

How to Stay Informed

We will communicate primarily by email, including when immediate pickup is necessary. Please double-check that your email address is current and can receive messages from The Dome.
Please ensure that the list of people approved to pick up your camper(s) is completely up to date, and include all people who you may call upon to pick up your camper on short notice. As the safety of all campers is our top priority, The Dome will never release campers to someone who is not on their approved pick-up list.
Updates and reopening information will also be posted on our Summer Camp page on the website.
We sincerely thank you for being part of The Dome community and for supporting our commitment to keeping every camper safe and cared for. If you have any questions or need help confirming your contact details, please reach out to david@thedome.us.
